Why does McConnell have any sway over the Senate trial?

Maybe I need a Civics class refresher, but if the Chief Justice presides over Senate trials for impeachment, why does the Senate Majority Leader have any power to affect things like how long the trial will take, whether they call witnesses, hear all arguments, etc?Shouldn’t that be a separation of powers given to the SCOTUS since in this case he’s acting as a presiding judge and the senators are the jurors? Or am I just conflating how things should work vs how things are?
